I sit with the security one had as a child in this splendid, rather old-fashioned place where people still say good morning and enjoy one of the last truly magnificent rural locations in the whole of the kingdom. The desire to paint comes easily, as a consequence, because the scene is bursting with ever changing artistic potential.
I live and work near Hay-on-Wye, the literary hub of Great Britain, and the border town where rural England merges with rugged Wales. I draw inspiration from the breathtaking surroundings of my studio, where the unspoiled natural beauty of Herefordshire blends with the mountain paths of the Brecon Beacons.
While I have no formal artistic training, painting and the history of art is in my blood – and has been since I first saw a print of Brughel’s Children’s Games aged around six or seven.
I feel a natural affinity for landscapes and seacapes – and for the rich and wonderful medium that is oil paint. My paintings have been described as ‘rustic and unpolished‘ – a good description, I think, as that also applies to the scenes that capture and inspire my attention.
My work has found homes in private collections throught the UK, Europe and Asia, and been exhibited at Acquire Arts in Battersea in London, Llangollen International Pavillion, Swansea Museum and Art Gallery, Wilton Castle and Ludlow Castle.
I am fortunate to be one of the artists in residence at The Felin Fach Griffin, where you can view some of my paintings over a meal or a drink. More of my work can be seen at my studio, where I work full-time and cordially invite you to visit.
